How to navigate Utah's new rules for e-bikes and e-motorcycles

E-bikes

What they are: Bikes with pedals and a power output of less than 750 watts, that operate within certain speed limits:

• A class 1 e-bike only uses power when the rider is pedaling and traveling slower than 20mph.
• Class 2 can power itself up to 20mph.
• Class 3 requires pedaling and stops using power at 28mph.

Kids 8-15 will have to be supervised by an adult to ride, or take a safety training course for an e-bike certification.

Helmets will be required for anyone younger than 21.

E-motorcycles

What they are: Any 2- or 3-wheeled electric vehicle that's sold without pedals, has a motor power of more than 750 watts or can go faster than 20mph on its own power.

• This includes popular Surron and E Ride Pro bikes.

Riders will face the same requirements as other motorcycles on the road, including a driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement and insurance.

• That means no street riding for kids under 16.
• Helmets are required, as before.
