Former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams is dominating the money race to represent Utah's only blue-leaning congressional district, according to recent campaign finance reports.
Why it matters: Utah's new court-imposed 1st Congressional District is expected to break for the left, the first time the state would send a Democrat to Congress since McAdams' 2018 defeat of GOP Rep. Mia Love.
Yes, but: A crowded Democratic field is taking shape as candidates head into the party's state nominating convention this weekend.
By the numbers: McAdams raised more than $1.5 million in total contributions, according to the latest campaign finance reports through April 5.
- About 43% of donations came from Utah donors, and 8% were $25 or under.
Nate Blouin, a state senator who is second in fundraising, amassed $518,674, about a third of McAdams' haul.
- Nearly 33% of his donations came from Utah, and 8% totaled $25 or under.
Liban Mohamed, who worked on tech policy for Meta and TikTok, garnered $121,231 from 92 donors.
- Eva Lopez Chavez, a Salt Lake City Council member and former Salt Lake County Democratic Party leader, raised nearly $50,000 from 14 donors, mostly from Utah.
- Attorney Michael Farrell raised about $25,000, and loaned himself $200,000.
The bottom line: McAdams' fundraising advantage reflects his established donor network and the name recognition he built during his time in Congress from 2019 to 2021.
