SLC's Broadway movie theater installing new seats

Why it matters: While commercial theater chains across the valley upgraded their seating years ago, fans of independent and classic films have been fluffing their improvised coat nests before settling in against the head rests from hell.

Our thought bubble: Kim literally gasped with joy when I mentioned this development in our daily newsletter planning meeting.

• We shorties are accustomed to arriving with pits in our stomachs as we wait for some giant in a ten gallon hat to plop down in front of us.
• Then it's two-plus hours of leaning over the drink holders to get a view between people's shoulders.

Reality check: The Broadway isn't installing stadium seating.

Yes, but: There will be two new styles of chairs, some with reclining seatbacks, movable arm rests and side tables (allowing for "date night" love seats, per the announcement) — and others with more butt space.

• Wheelchair access will also improve with new platforms in the center rear of each theater.
• At least three theaters will remain open during the upgrade.

The bottom line: Anything that gives us more wiggle room to find a comfortable sightline is a huge improvement.
