2 Congressional Utahns break with Trump on Greenland

Two members of Utah's all-Republican Congressional delegation are pushing back on President Trump's threat to take over Greenland.

Why it matters: The split within Utah's delegation echoes growing friction in the GOP nationally in the aftermath of Trump's promise to "run" Venezuela following the Jan. 3 capture of leader Nicolás Maduro.

Driving the news: Utah Sen. John Curtis posted Wednesday on X that military force in Greenland "is not appropriate, not necessary, and not something I will support. Full stop."

One day earlier, Rep. Blake Moore joined Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Maryland) in a statement condemning Trump's "saber-rattling" as "needlessly dangerous" and warned against "a civil war among NATO that endangers our security and our way of life."

Zoom out: Reps. Mike Kennedy and Celeste Maloy have remained silent on Greenland.

A year ago, Rep. Burgess Owens cosponsored a bill to authorize Trump to "enter negotiations" with Denmark to acquire Greenland. Owens hasn't weighed in since Trump renewed the push late last month.

The other side: Sen. Mike Lee, responding to predictions that invading Greenland would destroy NATO, posted, "Is that a dare?"
