BYU tops Utah colleges in 2025 U.S. News rankings

Brigham Young University is once again the top school in Utah, per U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges rankings released Tuesday.
Why it matters: As universities face changing demographics and skepticism about the value of postsecondary education, competition between institutions has become steeper.
By the numbers: Among more than 400 national universities evaluated, BYU tied for 110th place this year, down one spot from last year.
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-operated school ranked No. 17 for "best value," No. 37 for its undergraduate business program, No. 74 for nursing and No. 96 for engineering.
Zoom out: The University of Utah tied for No. 151, down 15 from last year.
- It also tied for No. 40 for undergrad business and nursing programs, No. 63 for computer science, No. 64 for engineering, No. 96 for psychology and No. 106 among "best colleges for veterans."
- Utah State University tied for No. 242 nationally, up 17 from 2024. It also tied for No. 112 for its engineering program.
Between the lines: The annual rankings are determined by 17 categories that evaluate student outcomes, academic resources and reputation.
- Caveat: Because the national rankings include more than 400 schools, small year-to-year changes are often statistically insignificant, "reflecting normal data fluctuations rather than shifts in quality," according to U.S. News.
