A new "VidAngel for audiobooks" is trying to to filter profanity — while sidestepping copyright issues

Catch up quick: VidAngel, a Utah-based pioneer in explicit-content-filtering, filed for bankruptcy after multiple film studios sued over copyright violations, alleging it hosted protected content on its own servers without permission.

• A California jury ordered the company in 2019 to pay more than $62 million, but the amount was reduced in bankruptcy court to $9.9 million.
• The company later re-emerged, using content from studios not involved with the lawsuit.

How it works: "We validate that (users) have access through legal, valid means, and then we're simply just the tool that lays on top," founder Adam Coffey told KSL.com.

• He says the system filters about 95% of a book's profanity and 70% to 90% of sexually explicit scenes. A monthly subscription costs $10.

Yes, but: The threat of lawsuits remains "one fear we do have," Coffey said.
