SLC schools issue parent tipsheet to brace for Trump-ordered immigration raids

What they're saying: "Please know that your child — and every child, regardless of immigration status — is welcome in our schools," read an email the district sent late Tuesday night to parents.

• "Undocumented children and young adults still have the same right to attend public primary and secondary schools as U.S. citizens and permanent residents," the message continued.

What's inside: Along with asking for up-to-date contact information, the message pledges that the district will not report students to immigration authorities and cannot share their immigration status because that information is not collected.

The intrigue: It specifically notes that student emergency contacts do not need to be family members.

• Some parents may be especially wary of providing their own contact information in light of Trump's promise to carry out the "largest deportation" in U.S. history.

The big picture: Trump this week announced sweeping immigration crackdowns in executive orders that:

• Bar asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border from being released into the U.S. while their cases are considered by immigration courts.
• Seek to end birthright citizenship for those born to undocumented immigrants — a move that at least 22 states are contesting as unconstitutional.

• Suspend refugee resettlements for four months.
• Send troops to the southern border.

Catch up quick: In a 2011 memo, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement ordered officers to avoid arrests, interviews, searches and surveillance at sensitive locations.

• Those included schools, hospitals, places of worship, funeral sites, weddings, marches, rallies or parades.

Flashback: A Honduran woman and her two daughters lived inside the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City for three years starting in 2018, after being denied asylum during Trump's first term.

• She fled to the U.S. in 2014 to escape an abusive boyfriend who she said repeatedly threatened to kill her.
• Trump announced during his first term that domestic violence would no longer be considered grounds for asylum.
