Some of Utah's rural counties saw the largest population gains since the pandemic, per an Axios analysis of new Census data.
Why it matters: Population growth in Utah's rural areas is outpacing urban centers, where housing costs have soared.
The big picture: The state's population increased 9.1% from 2014-2018 to 2019-2023
Zoom in: Daggett (22.1%), Iron (22.1%) and Washington (18.2%) were among the fastest-growing counties in the state during that time frame.
Salt Lake County's population increased by 5.7%.
Meanwhile, Piute County lost 10.5% of its residents, the most of any county in the state, followed by San Juan County, which experienced a 5.3% decrease.
Just six of Utah's 29 counties saw population losses.
