Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson holds major lead against GOP opponent

Flashback: Wilson was appointed to the office in 2019 to replace then-Mayor Ben McAdams after he was elected to represent Utah's 4th Congressional District.

• Wilson won election in 2020 after beating the GOP challenger, Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, by almost 7 percentage points.
• She ran against Sen. Mitt Romney in the U.S. Senate race in 2018. Rider, an attorney in Salt Lake City, unsuccessfully challenged then-U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart in the GOP primary in 2022.
• In 2005, Wilson became the first woman to be elected to serve on the Salt Lake County Council.

Between the lines: Wilson is the daughter of former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson, who served three terms between 1975 and 1985.

Democrat Natalie Pinkney was ahead of Republican candidate Rachelle Morris in the the county's at-large C race by about 20,000 votes, per early election results.

• In the contest to replace outgoing GOP council member David Alvord and represent District 2, which encompasses the western portions of the valley, Republican Carlos Moreno had a narrow 3 percentage point lead against Democrat Kate Olson.
• To represent District 6, which includes the southeastern part of the county, Republican incumbent Dea Theodore was ahead of Democrat Zach Robinson by only 151 votes.
