The amount of alcohol in a Utah cocktail taste test

The fine print: That's still far less than an ounce of liquor.

• "We're talking maybe a couple drops of something that has multiple juices, syrups — things … that are added to the overall volume of the cocktail," Jordon Strang, bar manager at the high-end HSL restaurant, told Axios.
• A Utah drink also may be smaller than what our home cookbook calls for, due to volume restrictions. No bars here serve a 4-oz. martini.

That means our estimates likely overstate the amount of alcohol consumed via straw tests.

Results: It took 70 tests with a cocktail straw from a 4-oz. drink in a martini glass to fill the 1-oz. jigger.

• It took 13 tests from an 8-oz. drink in a highball glass to fill an ounce using a large soda straw.
• We gave up counting after 100 straw tests in a rocks glass (the squatty one).

The bottom line: Bartenders who spoke to Axios estimated anywhere from 10 to 30 straw tests per night.

• Even if they're testing 30 Tom Collinses with a soda straw, that's barely a half-ounce of liquor during a 4- to 8-hour shift.
