The tallest wing roller coaster in the world opens next year at Kings Dominion

The big picture: Rapterra, a coaster inspired by a mythical Jungle Hawk bird of prey, is currently under construction at the 60-acre theme park in Doswell, on the site of the former Volcano roller coaster.

• It should be finished this fall and will open in 2025 as part of the park's 50th anniversary.
• It's Kings Dominion's first new roller coaster since the park merged with Six Flags.

By the numbers: When completed, Rapterra will stand 145 feet tall and 3,086 feet long.

• It'll go zero to 65 miles per hour in four seconds.
• Plus, it'll have an S-turn, a wing slide, a flat spin, an airtime hill and a 360-degree raptor roll — a total of three flips over the 89-second ride, per the park.

Worth noting: Rapterra will be the world's tallest and longest launched wing coaster — where riders are dangled alongside the track as opposed to atop it.

• The tallest overall roller coaster in the world is Kingda Ka at the Six Flags in New Jersey.
