Raleigh to lift water restrictions after rain-soaked July

Driving the news: July's rainfall has taken Raleigh's water supply in the Falls Lake from 66% to 84% full over the last week, according to the most recent release of data on Tuesday.

• That would put the lake, which is Raleigh's primary source of drinking water, above the levels where water restrictions are triggered.

By the numbers: This past month has been a stunning reversal for the area, which had been off to its driest-ever start to the year.

• More than 12 inches of rain has fallen in July at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the second-most on record. More rain has fallen this month than the entire first six months of the year, according to the National Weather Service.

Zoom in: Raleigh's secondary water sources have also improved this month, with Lake Benson full and Lake Wheeler almost full, according to the city.

• Neighboring Durham, however, still has water restrictions in place.

What they're saying: "While recent rain has made a big difference, dry conditions will continue across our region," the city warned in a statement. "Falls Lake is not yet back to full capacity, and it is important to continue using water wisely."
