As the eyes of the golf world turn toward North Carolina this week for the PGA Championship, a generational change is happening inside the sport.
Why it matters: When you look around at the record-breaking crowds at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, it might look a bit younger than you expected.
Millennials expect to spend about $4,557 this year on golf gear and expenses like course fees and club memberships, according to the survey.
That's $693 more than Gen X and $1,798 more than Boomers.
State of play: Golf is gaining a bigger and younger audience, with participation growing for six straight years.
The big picture: North Carolina, in particular, has benefited from the game's resurgence.
Courses in North Carolina saw a surge in new golfers after the pandemic made the game a natural outlet for those looking to socialize in an outdoor setting.
And the state continues to attract marquee events, including the 2024 U.S. Open in Pinehurst (a town that continues to grow its influence in the game) and now the PGA Championship in Charlotte. The U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst in 2029.
