The presidential race in North Carolina has tightened to a "toss up" from "lean Republican," and New Hampshire and Minnesota have shifted to "likely Democrat," Cook Political Report's Amy Walter wrote yesterday.
Why it matters: The "Tar Heel State looks more competitive than ever," with Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents "coming home" to back Vice President Kamala Harris against former President Trump in swing states he was tipped to win just months ago, per Walter.
Driving the news: "Trump hasn't lost political ground since July; instead it's that Harris has improved" on President Biden's vote share, wrote Walter, who noted the Cook Political Report Swing State Project survey in May showed Biden seven points behind Trump (41% to 48%).
"Her success was driven by increasing her margins with Democrats (+13), Black voters (+4) and independent voters (+13)."
