Following Tuesday night's decisive Democratic victory for control of Congress, Oregon's two veteran U.S. senators are in line to take powerful positions on Capitol Hill.

The big picture: Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley could soon lead influential committees that help decide how the federal government raises and spends money now that Democrats have reclaimed the Senate majority.

Here's how:

💰 Wyden: The longtime senator (who first assumed the position in 1996) is positioned to reclaim the chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee — a powerful seat that oversees federal tax policy, trade, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

He said yesterday he plans to investigate the Trump administration and tackle affordability. Wyden also serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

🏛️ Merkley: Fresh off winning a fourth term, Merkley is the ranking member — and could be in line for chair — of the Senate Budget Committee, which helps set federal spending priorities and establishes Congress' annual budget framework.

In his victory speech, he said he wants to cut down on defense spending, reduce the national debt and reverse Republican-backed tax breaks.

Between the lines: Committee chairs influence legislation priorities and what hearings are held, among other things.

Reality check: President Trump retains veto power.

Plus: Most Senate legislation requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
