I-5 closure to disrupt Portland school commutes

Zoom in: Boise-Eliot Elementary, SEI Academy, Harriet Tubman Middle School, Beverly Cleary-Fernwood, Grant High School, Jefferson High School, KairosPDX and Sabin Elementary are all expected to experience the most traffic during the five-week shutdown, according to PBOT.

• The agency plans to temporarily install speed-reader boards and "Local Access Only" signs near the impacted schools to discourage cut-through traffic.

Meanwhile, Portland Public Schools is staging about 40 buses at Southwest Portland's Jackson Middle School so some routes can begin and end closer to the schools they serve.

• In a note to parents, the district said the move aims to cut down on time buses spend traveling through the corridors expected to see the worst congestion.
• The district is also telling families to expect longer, less predictable travel times and to build in extra time.
• PPS did not respond to Axios' questions about whether traffic-delayed students would get leniency for tardiness.

What we're watching: The real test will come at 8am and 3pm, when school traffic and diverted commuters collide.
