Portlanders enroll in Oregon'semergency alert system at a drastically lower rate than our rural counterparts, a new study finds.
Why it matters: Receiving an alert to a disaster can provide crucial time to get to a safe place.
Zoom in: Researchers from the Ohio-based Miami University found that residents of Lincoln, Douglas, Curry and Clatsop counties had nearly 100% enrollment in the OR-Alert system, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported.
Multnomah County had an enrollment rate of just 13%, with most of those being "internal Portland employees."
Threat level: Wildfires, landslides and floods are more common in rural areas, but there are still plenty of threats to Portland — earthquakes, hazardous materials spills, among them.
