Portland remains undefeated at eating well without breaking the bank — even as inflation lingers and grocery prices stay stubbornly high.
The big picture: The city offers no shortage of options, from weekday oyster specials and all-day beer deals to late-night dumplings, discounted pasta and old-school happy hours.
- Here are just a few of the spots we've tried, tested and love.
Sugar Hill
3348 SE Belmont St.
The "pre-inflation" menu on Tuesdays boasts $1 oysters (up to a dozen), $3 cheeseburger and $3 fries. Wash it all down with a Miller Lite, shot of tequila or glass for Vinho Verde for $3 each.
Life of Pie
Multiple locations
The bang-for-your-buck factor at this beloved pizzeria chain is off the hook: $8 margherita pies and $6 beer and wine daily. I smell a date night.
Sushi Hada
3808 N. Williams Ave.
All plates at this sushi boat restaurant are $3.25 or less daily from 11am to 4pm. You won't want to pass on the salmon sashimi, dragon rolls and salty edamame. Stack 'em up!
Salty's on the Columbia River
3839 NE Marine Dr.
Get your fix of $6 chowder or a giant $18 plate of crab nachos with a panoramic view of the water during Crabby Hour, Tuesday through Friday from 3-5pm.
Huber's Cafe
411 SW Third Ave.
This Portland institution (opened in 1879) offers a very well-priced happy hour daily from 4-6pm and then 9pm to close. Top-brass items include a $9 shrimp cocktail, a $13 smoked salmon plate and $10 Mongolian beef skewers.
Von Ebert Taproom
825 N. Cook St.
Grab a 20-ounce stein of this craft brewer's World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Fest gold-medal-winning Clubhaus Lager for $3 all day, every day.
St. Francis Ice Cream
4515 SE 63rd Ave.
A $6 smash burger? We're sold. Add on a milkshake and fries for another $11? Double sold.
Kachka Fabrika
2117 NE Oregon St., Suite 202
Those who prefer a late-night nosh will love what's on offer inside this distillery. From 9-11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, you can get caviar bumps, a basket of clam strips and a red-hot bowl of buffalo chicken pelmeni all for $10 each.
- The $5 mini freezer martinis are a nice touch, too.
Bhuna
704 NW 21st Ave.
The $6 cheesy garlic masala pav sliders — with your choice of pork, chicken or paneer, served with a side of cooling raita sauce — are the thing to order at this Kashmiri hot spot from 4-6pm daily.
Campana
901 NE Oneonta St.
Woodlawn locals have it made with this Italian restaurant's nightly happy hour. Enjoy a handful of pasta dishes that normally push upward of $30 for less than half the price. End the meal with $5 cannolo.
Aalto Lounge
3356 SE Belmont St.
No cheap-eats list is complete without this stalwart cocktail bar. The $7 happy hour list includes shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, grilled cheese and tomato soup, fried cheese curds, and caramelized onion dip.
- We give you permission to order the $3 Jell-O shot, too.
