Mayor Keith Wilson declared a victory of sorts after he met a self-imposed deadline of setting up 1,500 new shelter beds by Dec. 1, one of his most prominent campaign promises.
At least 380 of those are "flex beds," which aren't currently in use but can be made available on short notice, per the Oregonian.
Yes, but: The other half of that campaign promise, to end unsheltered homelessness in Portland, is far from fulfilled with thousands of Portlanders sleeping on the street every night.
What he's saying: Wilson said he will now focus more attention on building affordable housing.
"Shelter saves lives today, but housing provides stability and dignity for a lifetime," the mayor said in a statement.
