It's hard to step outside in Portland this time of year without being smacked in the eyeballs by the splendor of fall. But if you want a real feast of autumnal aesthetics, head to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Southeast.
The big picture: The nearly 10-acre garden, sandwiched between Reed College and East Moreland Golf Course, shines in the spring when its namesake flower blooms.
- But fall offers a different, more serene, pop of color as nature dazzles before the long, gray months set in.
- Stroll the quiet paths, watch the various waterfowl feed in the lake, grab a seat next to one of the three waterfalls and get some thinking done.
If you go: The garden is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except Wednesdays (1pm to 5pm); admission is $9.
