Portland to give away 4,000 free trees

In an effort to expand Portland's urban canopy, the city is giving away 4,000 trees to anyone who wants to plant one on their properties.

Why it matters: Portland's tree canopy is on the decline.

• With less shade, some neighborhoods — especially those on the east side — are more exposed to deadly summer heat.

How to get one: Qualifying residents (meaning those who have space in their yard) can apply to get up to three free trees and pick between 28 species.
