If you drive over the Broadway Bridge regularly, you might want to make alternative travel plans: the span will close for six months starting next month.
Driving the news: Work to replace the bridge deck will start Oct. 13 and all vehicles — including the Portland Streetcar — will lose access through mid-April.
Because the drawbridge still needs to go up and down to allow for river traffic, contractors will need to remove small sections of the deck one at a time to keep the span in balance, hence the lengthy closure.
Yes, but: The south sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.
The big picture: While some have argued Portland has too many bridges (not us), the Broadway provides the most direct route into the Pearl and a crucial link to Moda Center.
I'm guessing this closure is gonna cause some headaches.
