Mt. Scott Community Center reopens with major upgrades

Nearly two years after it closed to the public, a gleaming new Mt. Scott Community Center reopens Tuesday.
Why it matters: The new center is filled with amenities you won't find anywhere else in Portland's park system.
Catch up quick: The center closed in November 2023 after the old facility —parts of which dated back to the 1940s — was found to be seismically unsafe.
- Over the last two years, it's been completely transformed into a modern hub for fitness, community and fun.
Zoom in: The new facility boasts a full-sized basketball court, a dance and Pilates studio, two preschool classrooms, three community events spaces, and an auditorium that clocks in at more than 2,000 square feet.
- It's also home to a two-story fitness center — with a full menu of weights and cardio machines — as well as the park system's only studio dedicated to spin classes.
- Another thing you'll find at Mt. Scott: the only city-owned roller rink in town.
- The large indoor pool, complete with a waterslide, is scheduled to open in mid-October.
Zoom out: There was a lot of thought put into the design, community center supervisor Adam McGowan told Axios, with mass timber framing, exposed wood throughout the building, and large windows blurring the lines between outside and in.
- "We didn't want to have separation between the center and the community," he told Axios.
