This school year marks the first for district-wide enforcement of Portland Public Schools' "off and away" cell phone policy.
Catch up quick: The policy — adopted in January but only enforced at a handful of schools until now — requires students to keep all personal electronic devices powered off and out of sight for the entire school day.
There are some exceptions, but students found in violation of the policy can face discipline and/or confiscation of their devices.
Zoom out: Portland schools are ahead of the timeline for a statewide ban on cell phones in schools, enacted by an executive order from Gov. Tina Kotek, which calls for a ban to go into effect in January.
