For a region that prides itself as a bike-friendly place, Multnomah County has a shockingly low share of folks getting around via pedals, a new report finds.
Why it matters: Walking and biking can be healthier alternatives to driving, create less air pollution and make for better neighborhood connectivity.
Driving the news: Multnomah County saw just 14% of trips taken on foot or by bike, with the remainder taken by car, according to transportation data firm StreetLight. Only 2% of trips here were made on a bicycle.
StreetLight ranked U.S. counties with at least 150 people per square mile by their trips taken on foot or by bike compared to vehicles in 2023.
The top counties in the country all had active shares north of 35%.
Caveat: Transit trips aren't included in the report.
Reality check: Vehicles are dominant in most of the country, with active transportation accounting for fewer than 10% of trips in over two-thirds of the counties analyzed.
