Troutdale's Sugarpine Drive-in elevates cherries with special summer menu

Strawberries are so last week. It's finally time for cherries to have their time in the spotlight.

State of play: To celebrate the season, Troutdale's Sugarpine Drive-in teamed up with Northwest Cherries to offer a special, limited-run menu highlighting the fruit in all its forms — fresh, dried, pickled, roasted and sauced — through the end of July.

Best bites: The drive-in eatery's beloved waffle-pressed grilled cheese is upgraded to include roasted fig and cherry jam, while a new McRib-inspired sandwich features smoked pork glazed with sour cherry and red barbecue sauce.

Plus: The cherries jubilee sundae — a maximalist concoction of vanilla soft serve, cherry-almond rum baba bites, sour cherry sauce and topped with saffron-chili almond crunch — the New York Times called one of the best dishes in America last year is also back.
Other notable items include a Japanese-style fruit sando, a cherry blossom Shirley Temple soda and a burrata salad where savory cherry granola and pickled cherries are the true stars.

If you go: Sugarpine Drive-in is open Wednesday through Monday, 11am to 5pm.
