Older homes dominate Portland sales

Half of the homes purchased in Portland last year were more than 30 years old, according to a recent Redfin report.
The big picture: A major construction slowdown here and across the nation "has fast-tracked the aging of America's housing stock," per Redfin.
- The median Portland home bought in Portland in 2024 was 31 years old — slightly younger than the U.S. average of 36.
By the numbers: It doesn't matter if the home is young or old in Portland, the median price for either hangs around the mid- to high $500,000s.
Zoom in: The number of homes built this decade in the city is projected to remain historically low. There's less new development on tap now than in 2009.
- Gov. Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson have introduced several proposals in the last few months — like streamlining permitting and zoning processes, as well as incentivizing office building conversions — to help spur more housing construction.
