Bite Club: Bagel sandwiches at Tabor Bread

The menu: Pastries galore, speciality sandwiches — served on either a bagel, focaccia, loaf or brioche bun — and a daily, rotating offering of fresh breads.

• We ordered the chocolate croissant, glazed brioche doughnut, Belmont breakfast sandwich (with Olympia Provisions sausage, white cheddar, chimichurri and a fried egg) and a herby cheese bagel.

Best bites: Portland may not be known as a bagel city, but Tabor Bread appears to be working to change that narrative. The crust was chewy, while the center was airy, delicate and full of herby flavor. Complemented with briny capers, crisp cucumbers and smooth cream cheese, it's go-out-of-your-way worthy.

• Plus: The croissant — with bittersweet chocolate and tangy whole wheat sourdough — makes for a pastry even Parisians would be jealous of.

The bottom line: Everything we tried was a banger, so makes sense why there's always a long (albeit quick-moving) line outside the door.
