To prepare for potential unrestduring the week of the election, the Portland Police Bureau spent $1.2 million in officer overtime — yet, large-scale protests never materialized and no arrests were made.
Yes, but: The cost was lower than the agency's estimate of $2 million earlier this fall, when Chief Bob Day asked officers to work 12-hour days and cancel days off from Election Day through the weekend, per the Oregonian.
By the numbers: According to PPB's overtime dashboard, officers worked 31,406 hours in overtime last month, more than the 28,910 overtime hours officers clocked back in November 2020 (when there were nightly protests).
