It's not too early to start thinking about Christmas — and Oregonians have a leg up on tree shopping.
State of play: Oregon remains the largest grower — and exporter — of Christmas trees in the country, with North Carolina coming in a close second.
- Over 1,000 Oregon farms grow more than 4 million Christmas trees annually — supplying nearly a third of the trees sold in the U.S.
Here are six great options to get your own Oregon tree.
Mount Hood National Forest
Cut your own tree — with a $5 permit — from Mount Hood or other national forests. But be prepared for winter weather and more.
You need to know the boundaries of where tree cutting is allowed and how far trees must be from the road and from each other.
- Permits are available online, at ranger stations and through select vendors.
- Families are limited to five trees total, and fourth-graders can get a free permit.
Cornell Farm
8212 SW Barnes Road, Portland
Cornell Farm offers upscale specialties such as organically grown Noble fir and a wide variety of living Christmas trees. Pre-cut.
- Delivery options include the "marriage saver tree setup" — which means they do everything but the decorations.
Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm
12814 NW Bishop Road, Hillsboro
Make Christmas-tree shopping an all-day, family-fun event with free tractor-train rides and marshmallows for the kiddos — plus artificial snow falling every five minutes.
- Helvetia offers both U-cut and pre-cut trees, including Turkish, Grand, Noble and Douglas firs. Dogs are welcome, too.
Lee Farms
21975 SW 65th Ave., Tualatin
Wander the U-cut fields for the perfect fir, or select one of the pre-cut options — either way staff will cut, shake, bale and load the tree for you.
- If you're looking for extra fun, be sure to visit during Lee's Winter Wonderland Festival weekends.
Rainy Mountain Farms
49400 E. Marmot Road, Sandy
Don't worry if you forget your own saw, there's loaners available at this U-cut far with stellar views of Mount Hood.
- Trees cost $50 each regardless of size (many range from table toppers to 12 footers) and are likely to sell out fast — so be sure to call if you're planning to go after Dec. 3.
U-Cut Christmas Trees Pacific Northwest Nobles
24730 NW Dixie Mountain Road, North Plains
Do-it-yourself types with a penchant for Noble firs will get a kick out of this farm — all tree cutting, hauling, and loading responsibilities are yours, but step stools and twine will be provided.
