For those of us looking to burn some calories before Thanksgiving's big meal, there are few better ways than jogging a relaxed 5K — long enough to get your heart rate up, but not so long that you'll be too tired to cook.
The big picture: The Portland area has a plethora of turkey trots for your choosing, many supporting great causes.
HTC Turkey Trot
Organized by the folks behind the region's biggest endurance race, this Wednesday evening trot under the "Winter Wonderland" lights at Portland International Raceway will start the holiday weekend off right.
- The race starts at 7:15pm on Nov. 27; registration is $40.
Turkey Trot at the Zoo
Hosted by the Oregon Road Runners Club, this family-friendly run starts and ends at the Oregon Zoo with a hilly jog out to the International Rose Garden in Washington Park.
- This one is sold out, but the race gets underway at 7:30am on Nov. 28 if you want to cheer on the trotters.
Oregon Turkeython
This event kicks off Thanksgiving morning at Cook Family Park in Tigard, and everyone who finishes the 5K gets a Turkeython finishers medal to show off at dinner.
- The run starts at 8am on Nov. 28; registration is $35 before Nov. 20.
Clark County Turkey Trot
For our Vancouver readers who don't want to cross the river, the Clark County Turkey Trot is the way to go. The race, which offers 5K and 10K options, starts and ends at Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek. For the brave, there's an optional polar plunge at the end.
- The race starts at 9am on Nov. 28; registration is $30, with an extra $5 for polar plungers.
