In the gymnasium of Charles Jordan Community Center in North Portland yesterday, Keith Wilson made his first appearance as mayor-elect.
Zoom in: The room was packed with press, supporters, residents and local politicians — including U.S. Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici, Commissioner Dan Ryan and several others running for a seat on the expanded council.
- Absent were Wilson's rivals, commissioners Carmen Rubio and Rene Gonzalez, who dropped out of the race yesterday.
- While he thanked them ("Their passion and innovation remains critical"), he spoke directly to voters on what his next four years would look like.
What he's saying: "The goal of my administration will not be to focus in on only the visible issues, like the terrible suffering on our streets," he said, adding that he plans to also focus on the high cost of living, lack of affordable housing and expanding transportation.
- "This is an awesome responsibility, and an awesome time in our city's future."
