Bite Club: Tostadas and burgers at Güero

In the name of balance, after a hike at Powell Butte last week, I headed to Kerns' premier Mexican restaurant Güero, located on the sun-filled corner of NE 28th and Davis, for some much-needed sustenance.

🍔 The menu: Although known for its tortas — sandwiches where marinated meats are piled high along with shredded lettuce, pickled veggies and salsa on a telera roll — Güero's hamburguesa, various tostadas and street food-inspired side dishes are also worthy orders.

I ordered the esquites, a play on Mexican street corn, and the deluxe tostada with pollo pibil (citrus-marinated chicken) with all the fixings, including guac, queso fresco and chile oil.

🌶️ The bite: Güero is not for the spice adverse, but those who relish in the subtle heat building of a dish. While the esquites was creamy — thanks to the lime-infused mayo and cotija — the chile added quite the invigorating bite.

Topped with perfectly crisp iceberg lettuce and watermelon radishes, the tostada almost felt refreshing in contrast to the warm, richly spiced pibil hidden underneath on a bed of crema.

The bottom line: If you're ever in need of a reliable, tasty meal, Güero continues to prove it is one spot not to be missed.
