What you need to know about the 11th annual Montavilla Jazz Fest

If you're sticking around town this holiday weekend, checking out jazz's local rising stars and legendary artists at the 11th annual Montavilla Jazz Festival is a no-brainer.

The latest: The festival kicks off tomorrow with a free opening show at Mount Tabor's Caldera Amphitheater, featuring Julana Torres' "La Colorá" alongside her brother, Carmelo Torres. Expect some Cuban cumbia-inspired tunes with dancing.

The vibe: Over 30 concerts and events take place across a dozen venues on Portland's east side with twice as many performances as last year.

For the mid-day crowd, there's several free DJ sets and jam sessions taking place at Montavilla Plaza, Beer Brats & Beats and Threshold Brewing.
Don't miss the headline acts at Alberta Rose Theatre, such as Portland-based violinist and vocalist Joe Kye performing with poet Shin Yu Pai for a night of storytelling.
Plus: Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Nicole Glover brings her trio — with bassist Tyrone Allen and drummer Kayvon Gordon — home for the first time.

If you go: Tomorrow through Sunday. Some events require tickets. Prices range from $5 to $45.
