Get ready to see a lot more electric scooters around town.
State of play: The Portland Bureau of Transportation recently announced multiyear contracts with Lyft and Lime to expand the city's electric scooter fleet and make its "micromobility" program a permanent fixture on streets and sidewalks.
By the numbers: Up to 3,500 combined scooters will be deployed by the companies each day, ensuring "Portlanders don't have to go far to find a ride," per a news release.
Up to 50 scooters will have seats for those who prefer the sit-down version, which also has a rear storage bucket.
Between the lines: Lyft already powers Portland's Biketown bike-share system. Now, both e-scooters and e-bikes can be booked using the Lyft or Biketown app. Lime users can continue booking rides through the app.
All scooters must be secured to a bike rack or street sign pole via new cable locks.
