Treat yourself to an evening of silent, communal reading under a 500-year-old Oregon white oak tree, while a ukulele gently strums to an orchestra of singing birds in the background.
The latest: Sauvie Island's Topaz Farms hosts a monthly summer silent reading party on its luscious 130-acre property.
Attendees bring makeshift picnic baskets, friends and a book or Kindle to watch the sunset in a picturesque landscape.
State of play: Silent reading parties are becoming the newest hot ticket item in Portland's book-centric culture.
For example, pop-up art gallery Ethereal Reflections also routinely hosts reading ceremonies with DJs and wine at local establishments that are known to sell out.
If you go: Topaz Farms is open every day starting at 10am. Pick some berries or peruse the market before heading to the oak tree for the party at 6pm.
Tickets are $25 and include a complimentary beverage. Other drinks and snacks are available for purchase.
Take along your own blanket or chair, or use the site's many picnic tables. Or just plop down right on the cool, green grass.
