With over a dozen Oregonians competing at the Summer Olympics in Paris this year, there's no better way to cheer on our own than at a local sports bar.
State of play: While the opening ceremony is on Friday at 5:30pm, several competitions start Wednesday.
- Wednesday's events kick off with the Olympic men's rugby tournament and a headline matchup between the U.S. men's soccer team and host nation France.
What to expect: Remember, Paris is nine hours ahead of Pacific Time, so keep that in mind when planning your day around an event.
- Here are five spots around town where they're showing all the action.
The Sports Bra
2512 NE Broadway
Dedicated to celebrating all things women's sports, this spot is sure to be playing many of the games featuring Oregon's female athletes — especially the U.S. women's national soccer matches, where two Thorns players are on the team.
Pro tip: If there's a game you want to watch here, get there early. With only 40 seats, it's bound to get cramped.
George's Corner Tavern
5501 N Interstate Avenue
A perfect place to stop in after work (or on your way to work depending on what game you're into) with friends, or make some new ones.
Pro tip: Don't be that guy, keep it polite: The bar has a no-cursing policy — no matter how lively the game gets.
McGillacuddy's Sports Bar
11133 NE Halsey Street
This neighborhood staple's all-you-can-eat weekend breakfast bar is not its biggest selling point: There are also 50 TVs — meaning you'll barely have time to blink between bites of buttermilk biscuits and Belgian waffles.
The Fields Bar & Grill
1139 NW 11th Avenue
💠Joseph's thought bubble: There's above-average bar food, friendly staff, and enough screens so you won't have to sacrifice your MLB game for the hammer throw.
- Plus: It has a cozy corner by the window and a large screen with couches for a group vibe. Those in need of a smoke break won't miss out, either, thanks to the wide sidewalk and big windows.
Katie O'Brien's
2809 NE Sandy Boulevard
You'll get a taste of old-school, Irish pub vibes with friendly patrons here. The bartenders are happy to put whatever matchup you want on one of their many big screens.
