REI's new Beaverton store opens Friday, two months after the company's Pearl District location closed despite city leaders attempts to keep it in town.

Why it matters: The company — headquartered in Sumner, Washington — is part of Portland's outdoorsy identity, particularly for cyclists who mourned the departure of the cycle repair store downtown.

Zoom out: There are REIs in Tualatin and Hillsboro and a "Re/Supply" resale store in Clackamas.

What they're saying: The store is the largest of the nine REIs in Oregon, according to REI Beaverton store manager Dacia Stockton.

How it works: As a co-op, REI charges a one-time, lifetime $30 fee, for discounts and an annual member reward of around 10% that comes on a card in the mail.

If you go: REI is holding a three-day grand opening starting at 10am Friday.

  • From 1–5 pm through Sunday, the parking lot will host booths from apparel brands including Arc'teryx, Osprey, and Columbia Sportswear, and from nonprofits such as Northwest Trail Alliance.
  • Regular hours are 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm Sunday.
