Despite the ongoing renovation, Portland International Airport had an above-average on-time performance last year compared to other large U.S. airports, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
By the numbers: PDX ranks fifth out of 104 large U.S. airports for annual on-time departures in 2023, according to the latest latest data.
- More than 85% of flights departing Portland were on time, compared to a national average of nearly 79%.
Zoom out: Boise Air Terminal had the best on-time departure in 2023 (86%), while Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (66%) had the worst.
What they're saying: On-time departure requires a coordinated effort between airlines, the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Aviation Administration.
- That's according to Allison Ferre, a spokesperson for the Port of Portland, which runs the airport.
- Other factors like ground transportation, parking, security checkpoints and ticketing also contribute to how quickly passengers and crews can get to their gates, Ferre told Axios via email.
The big picture: More than 83% of domestic U.S. flights departed on time in December 2023.
- That's a big upswing compared to December 2022, when Southwest Airlines' epic meltdown dragged the industry-wide average down to about 70% for the month.
