Portland's Central Library has reopened after a year of renovations.
- The jewel in the crown of the Multnomah County Library system had its soft reopening Wednesday to test some 21st-century improvements.
Why it matters: The reopening comes as libraries struggle to become more inclusive.
- The remodel cost $13 million, most of which came from voter-approved bonds.
Staff greeted a trickle of readers at 10 am.
Details: Upgrades include new paint, furniture, meeting spaces, restrooms, seating, charging technology, automation and sound-absorbing green carpet.
Architect A.E. Doyle's 1913 building retains several vintage elements such as tall windows and hefty wooden desks.
- In a thrifty touch, the square Dell monitors also remain.
What we're watching: An endowment ensures fresh flowers are still placed weekly on the first-floor landing in memory of philanthropist and Portland Garden Club member Ruth Roberts Templeton.
What's next: Central Library's official opening is Friday at 10am.
