Phoenix had second-hottest summer on record in 2026

Zoom in: Only the summer of 2024 was hotter than 2026, averaging 98.9 degrees.

• The summer of 2023 also averaged 97 degrees.
• Phoenix also just experienced its hottest winter and spring on record.

By the numbers: June averaged 95 degrees. July averaged 97.4 and August 95.5.

• Through Sunday, 2026 ranks fourth in 110-degree days (39) and third in days in which the temperature didn't dip below 90 degrees (29).

Zoom out: The contiguous U.S. also experienced both its hottest summer and hottest August on record, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.

• Summer clocked in at an average temperature of 74.4 degrees. That's 3 degrees above the 20th-century average.

What's next: The hard edge has come off the summer in Phoenix, but the heat isn't quite done with us.

• NWS forecasts highs between 99 and 105 for the rest of the week.
• On average, Phoenix dips below 100 for good by Sept. 29, although the Valley has experienced triple-digit heat as late as Oct. 27.
