Judge sends Arizona 2020 "fake electors" case back to grand jury

State of play: Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sam Myers ruled that Mayes must re-present the case to a grand jury because her team never provided jurors with the text of the Electoral Count Act of 1887 — the law electors believe proves their innocence.

• The judge wrote that the defendants were "denied a substantial procedural right" because the AG's office did not provide adequate information to the grand jury.
• A grand jury will now reconsider the indictments. The timeline for this is not yet known.

The latest: "We vehemently disagree with the court and we will file a special action to appeal the ruling," Mayes' spokesperson Richie Taylor said in a statement to Axios.

Catch up quick: The grand jury initially indicted the electors last April. Each of the 11 faces nine felony counts for conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and artifices and forgery.

• The indicted electors are: Tyler Bowyer, Nancy Cottle, state Sen. Jake Hoffman, former state Sen. Anthony Kern, Jim Lamon, Robert Montgomery, Samuel Moorhead, Loraine Pellegrino, Greg Safsten, Kelli Ward and Michael Ward.
• Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, Trump's former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and other Trump allies were also indicted as part of Mayes' case.
• Ellis and Pellegrino have already accepted plea deals, which Taylor said remain valid despite Friday's ruling.
