Philly nonprofit breaks Guinness World Record

Philly nonprofit Sharing Excess helped set a new Guinness World Record for donating more than 543,000 pounds of fresh produce during a Canadian food rescue event last weekend.

Why it matters: It's another flex for the group's founder, Drexel alum Evan Ehlers, who started the nonprofit in 2018 to help solve food security in one of the nation's poorest cities.

Driving the news: Sharing Excess collaborated with the Canadian produce company Odd Bunch to pull off the massive feat at Surrey's Ugly Potato Day.

Together they provided produce for 37,000 people.

By the numbers: The 543,501-pound haul broke the previous record for the largest single-day donation of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Philly food rescue operation says it has redistributed more than 282 million pounds of food since it was first started.

What's ahead: The group is holding its next pop-up food distribution at noon on Thursday at the Chester Community Center.
