Philly hero-turned-heel Terrell Owens is hosting a big watch party at Brooklyn Bowl for the Eagles' Sept. 4 season-opener against the Cowboys.
Why it matters: The Hall of Fame wide receiver is best suited for the job because he signed with NFC East rival Dallas after his unceremonious departure from Birdland in 2006.
Driving the news: DraftKings is also bringing in Super Bowl-winning Eagles quarterback Nick Foles and retired linebacker Fletcher Cox for the gameday celebration.
- The free 21+ party runs (register here) from 6pm to midnight, with a special post-game performance from DJ Diplo.
Zoom in: Fans looking to emulate T.O.'s highlight-worthy catches and showstopping TD celebrations can dive into the "Touchdown Toss" foam pit for a chance to win prizes.
- Plus, free bowling!
The intrigue: As Owens famously said in Dallas, "Getcha popcorn ready!" It's going to be a show.
- Owens should expect somewhat of a chilly reception in Philly, especially since he's tapping into the same anti-hero ethos he channeled his entire career.
- Shamelessly, he's returning to a city where some fans still hold a grudge against him for blowing up a Super Bowl-contending team over a contract dispute.
What I'm hearing: As an Axios Philly reader put it, "Terrell who?" — yep, some are choosing to forget the guy who caught many of former QB Donovan McNabb's career-high 31 touchdowns during the 2004-05 season, then finished with nine catches for 122 yards in Super Bowl XXXIX, seven weeks after breaking his leg against Dallas.
- But one Eagles fan says his blood no longer boils at the mention of T.O., soothed by the Eagles winning two championships since Owens left.
The bottom line: Heel? Maybe that's too strong for some Philly fans.
- But hero? They ain't a bunch of Dalai Lamas.
