Mawn's Phila Lorn wins big at James Beard Awards

Mawn's chef Phila Lorn scored a big W on Monday night at the James Beard Awards.

Why it matters: "The Beards" are a big deal, considered the Oscars of the American hospitality industry.

• He opened his Cambodian noodle house in Bella Vista in 2023 with his wife Rachel.

What he's saying: Lorn said during his acceptance speech in Chicago that he dedicated the award in part to assumptions.

• "The assumption that Mawn was just another restaurant," he said. "It was too small. It wasn't focused enough. The assumption that the food wasn't going to be good enough or authentic enough. I wasn't popular enough. Also the assumption that this little Cambodian boy wasn't going to come out where they put him."
• But he added: "When I found out I was nominated for this award, the assumption was I was going to win it."

• Jesse Ito of Royal Sushi & Izakaya and Amanda Shulman of Her Place Supper Club for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.
• The Lovers Bar at Friday Saturday Sunday for Outstanding Bar.

Yes, but: Making the Beards' finalist round is huge, signaling that a restaurant, bar or chef ranks among the best in the nation.

Flashback: Philly's dining scene was shut out of the Beards' prestigious Restaurant and Chef Awards last year after a strong 2023 showing.

• Worth noting: Vietnam Restaurant in Chinatown won the America's Classics award from Beard in 2024.
