An eye-catching bridge opens along the newest stretch of the Schuylkill River Trail on Saturday.
Why it matters: The $48 million project fills a gap in the roughly 75-mile trail that links South Philly to Center City.
Driving the news: The Christian to Crescent Trail Connector adds 2,800 feet of new trail, partly over the river, linking Christian Street to the Grays Ferry Crescent.
👀 Coolest feature: A 650-foot, woven-harp configuration bridge, the first of its kind in the state.
- A pair of towers rise 165 feet above the Schuylkill River, accompanied by night-time lights that will illuminate them.
🌳 What else: New benches, lighting, trees and trash cans.
- Plus: A new tunnel under the 34th Street Bridge along the trail.
Zoom out: The project is the latest addition to the national East Coast Greenway, which aims to create a 3,000-mile pedestrian route from Florida to Maine.
What's next: A bridge opening celebration and ribbon cutting kicks off at 10:30am Saturday at the northern end of the project near Christian Street.
