There's a new youth soccer club in town: Inter Philly, the product of a three-club merger that looks to further develop young players.
Why it matters: Philadelphia has a growing infatuation with the game, is hosting World Cup matches next year and adores the Union, which last year signed teenage phenom Cavan Sullivan.
Driving the news: Known officially as the Philadelphia International Football Club, the merger joins the Fairmount Soccer Association, Philadelphia City FC and United Philly Soccer Club.
- Organizers hope the new league becomes a "powerhouse in youth soccer" by welcoming players of all skill levels and ages — starting as young as 2.
- More advanced players will have opportunities to join travel squads.
By the numbers: 50 to 60 coaches
- About 2,000 players, including about half whom will play travel soccer.
Zoom in: Fairmount Soccer Association and Philadelphia City FC existed for decades, while United Philly Soccer was a relative newcomer, building up its reputation over the last eight years as a place for young players to train for high-school and college competition, per Inter Philly organizers.
The pros: Better coaching. Inter Philly says it'll recruit the best soccer coaches in the region, including many with college or professional playing experience who can help guide college prospects through the recruiting process.
- Better recreational soccer offerings and digs, including access to top-tier training facilities across the Philly region.
What's ahead: The league is currently registering for tryouts, held in March and April, ahead of the fall 2025 season.
What they're saying: "This is going to live long past all of us," Wendy Smith, Inter Philly's co-executive director, tells Axios.
