FIFA's six World Cup matches coming to Philadelphia in 2026 are expected to have a roughly $770 million economic impact on the region, according to the nonprofit behind the city's bid.
Why it matters: That would be the largest payday ever from a single sporting event or celebration held in Pennsylvania.
What they're saying: "Philadelphia has not hosted an event of this duration … ever before, so this impact is dramatically different," Meg Kane, host-city executive for Philadelphia Soccer 2026, said before a hearing on the city's 2026 planning.
- They're anticipating that areas well beyond the typical Philly metro, like Berks, Lancaster and York counties, will be able to cash in on the tournament too.
The big picture: The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11-July 19 in stadiums across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
- Philly will host five group stage matches in June 2026 and one Round of 16 match on July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field.
By the numbers: The $770 million estimate factors in investments and tourism dollars, among other sources. As a host city, Philly is expected to:
- Welcome 500,000 attendees during the entirety of the tournament;
- Create more than 6,600 jobs;
- Bring in $51 million in tax revenues for the region, including $30 million for Philly.
Zoom out: FIFA is among several high-profile events packed into 2026 in Philly.
- Those include the 250th anniversary of America's independence and the MLB All-Star Game.
What's next: In her prepared remarks, Kane said she is asking the city for $6 million more to prepare for the event, on top of the $3.5 million Mayor Cherelle Parker's administration already earmarked for it.
- Meanwhile, Councilmember Isaiah Thomas said at a news conference Monday that he wants the city and state to invest $50 million to $100 million into Philly for the 2026 events.
