Netflix's "Tires" and other film projects cash in on Pennsylvania tax credits

A Netflix comedy series, a historical movie and several other film projects are getting more than $9 million in tax credits to bring their productions to Pennsylvania.

The big picture: An arms race has broken out in recent years among states using incentives to lure film productions — and with them jobs and attention. Many have expanded their tax credit programs since 2021.

Pennsylvania boosted its film production tax credit in 2022 to $100 million from $70 million.

Driving the news: The state announced this week that Netflix's "Tires," starring comedian and Mechanicsburg native Shane Gillis, will receive more than $5.5 million in state tax credits for its second season, which is produced in Philly, per a news release.

The first season was primarily shot in West Chester.

Plus: Historical drama "A Great Awakening" will receive $2.6 million. The film is currently in production in Philly and Lancaster County.

10 other projects will get a combined $1 million, including a pair of documentary episodes from History Making Productions focusing on American democracy and music in Philly.

Between the lines: Pennsylvania has cashed in on more than $3 billion in revenues from film production since its tax program began in 2007.
