The Trumpiest neighborhood in Philadelphia isn't in Northeast, a long-time magnet for Republicans.
- Instead, head to South Philly, where an enclave of rowhomes in Melrose near Marconi Plaza gave President-elect Donald Trump his biggest margins this election with 73.7%, according to unofficial results Thursday.
The big picture: Philly voted overwhelmingly for Vice President Kamala Harris, but Trump outperformed his previous runs in the city.
- Meanwhile, Harris underperformed compared to President Joe Biden's victory in 2020.
By the numbers: Harris won Philly with 78% of the vote, per the city's unofficial results.
- But Trump's 20% was more than he had in 2020, when he took 17.8% of the vote.
- And nowhere did he do better than in Division 26-04, which makes up a sliver of Melrose.
Why Melrose? It's situated in a Democratic district represented by City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. But Vince Fenerty, head of the city's GOP committee, tells Axios "it's always been a strong Republican area."
- The middle-class, Italian American neighborhood is "proud of their heritage," Fenerty says, and has chafed at what's seen as attacks on local symbols, like the removal of the Frank Rizzo statue and the boxing of Marconi Plaza's Christopher Columbus statue.
Zoom out: The next-Trumpiest division was 26-02 in South Philly's Packer Park and the Navy Yard at 72.6%.
- Another area of Packer Park (Division 26-03) reached 72.5%.
- And Division 63-17 in Bustleton in Northeast Philly and 26-01 in Packer Park were tied with 71.3%.
The bottom line: Trump won five of Philly's 66 wards, two more than in 2020.
